DEERPARK LAWN TENNIS CLUB

The 2010 opening of the extended pavillion with guest speaker Joe Flood.

The founders of Deerpark Tennis Club were Joe Flood, Gladys Hamilton, Maureen Millington, and Dick Humphreys.  They conceived the idea in 1975, acted on it, and with the help of the then Dublin County Council, got the facility up and running.

The Committee in the late 1970’s and early 80’s attended committee meetings in a little portacabin that sat at the side of the courts. The courts were originally tarmac and there was no perimeter fencing, flood-lights or facilities of any kind.  Slowly but surely, these improvements and developments took place, as well as court re-surfacings, two additional tennis courts etc.

There are now six synthetic, sand based, flood-lit courts.  Deerpark has over over 300 family memberships with approx 1000 individual members.  There are several each of Mens, Ladies and Junior teams that play competitve inter-club tennis in the various Dublin Lawn Tennis Council league campaigns that run throughout the year.  We also hold many internal club competitions, social tennis, annual championships, coaching and social activities throughout the year.

The original Clubhouse was opened in 1986 under the stewardship of former Chairman Jim Callan.  There was an agreement with the Council to provide occasional labour on a FAS community employment scheme and the club supplied materials.  The building took several years to complete on this basis.

The Development Committee for the new clubhouse which opened in 2010 was formed around 2002 when initial plans were drawn up.  They had many set-backs and hurdles to cross.  After several planning refusals, re-designs and re-applications, we finally got the go-ahead in late 2008/early 2009.

The new Deerpark Tennis Club House -  Official Opening took place on 14th August 2010.
An Eccumenical blessing was performed by Fr Tony Coote and The Rev. Gillian Wharton.  The Chairman of the Club, Jim Flannery presided over the opening ceremony which was attended by many members and dignitaries including Lettie Lucas, President of Tennis Ireland and Lettie McCarthy, Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co. Co. The ribbon was cut by founding member Joe Flood and his wife Marie.
